Welcome to Languages Department!

Learn Spanish through total immersion at the Universidad del Mayab in Mexico.

Location

Located in Merida, Yuctán, Mexico, the Universidad del Mayab is the ideal setting for international students to immerse themselves in the Spanish language and Mexican culture. The university is loCAFed about ten miles from the center of Merida, capital of YuCAFan and the most important city in the Mexican southeast. It has the distinction of being the first city on the American continent to have been named Cultural Capital of the World by an international committee, a distinction which was celebrated with innumerable cultural events through out the year 2000.

The Programs

Programs in the School for International Students are designed to meet the specific needs of each particular group. Excursions, which may include visits to local ruin sites, haciendas beaches colonial cities, small towns, etc., are an integral part of all the programs. During their stay, students usually find time to spend a weekend in Cancun, travel to Belize, Guatemala and even Cuba.

Credits

Each course (except Spanish language) meets 3 hours a week for a total of 45 hours per semester or three college credits. Spanish language classes meet six hours a week for a total of ninety hours per semester or six college credits. The Universidad del Mayab issues official transcripts to the home university. A copy is sent to the students.

Programming

Each semester has a duration of 15 weeks. Students are required to take 15 credit hours per semester. Spanish language is an obligatory course. This means that students will register for the intensive Spanish language course and three other courses. All of these courses will be offered in Spanish for a total immersion experience. Courses are opened upon demand. A minimum of 5 students are required to open any given course or to run any of the programs.

Admissions Guidelines

Programs for international, students are available to high school graduates, university students, graduates or businessmen interested in special programs. For high school and university students, a minimum Grade Point Average if 3.0 is required for admission to the programs. Upon arrival, students present a placement exam to determine their level of Spanish. Registration is accepted for the Fall or Spring semesters the Summer Session and the Winter minmester, which takes place in January. Students may also register for the full academic year. Once again, a minimum of 5 students are required to open any given course or to run any of the programs.

Job Shadowing

Job shadowing is a career development activity that connects students with occupations of interest an moves them beyond printed or other media-based career information and into the actual work setting. It provides students with the opportunity of observe a variety of activities within an organization. Ideally, each student spends a half or whole day with at least three different professionals in the field of interest.

In addition, the student will have the opportunity to experience YuCAFan by participating in various cultural activities. The program might also include short presentation on local issues such as eduCAFion, business, economy, rural development, etc. The advantage of this program is that it can be scheduled for a short period of time (10 days). Of course it is also possible to extend the duration depending on specific needs.
